On Tuesday, January 27, Youville Centre celebrated Family Literacy Day! An initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada, Family Literacy Day “is a national awareness initiative held annually on January 27 to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family”(www.abclifeliteracy.ca).
As moms arrived at the centre that morning, they entered a draw to win a Raffi CD and book to take home and enjoy with their child. Also, favourite books were offered to our students so that they could take home to read with their child.
Later that morning, our Early Childhood Educators held a special “circle time”, during which they chose from a selection of books (that was generously donated by a family member of one of our young moms) to read to Youville’s babies and toddlers.
Photos were taken and then displayed on the television screens throughout the building, so that our young moms could see photos of their children enjoying the reading circle.
At Youville Centre, we believe literacy is very important for both mother and child, and we fully promote the act of reading together as a family. We were pleased to participate in Family Literacy Day and we plan to celebrate this special day in the years to come.
